When I was a kid, Larsmont boasted an area code, a post office, butcher shop and Mom and Pop convenience store we called “Ollies Store”. My little brother and I walked the barely discernible shoulder of Scenic Hwy 61 to buy penny candy. Larsmont was first settled in 1888 at Milepost 22 on the Duluth and Iron Range Railroad. It was founded by Finland-Swedish immigrants from Larsmo, Ostrobothnia. On October 12, 1918 part of the great 1918 Cloquet Fire burned down the hillside as far as the railroad tracks. A post office was established in 1916. In 1963, Larsmont was assigned zip code 55610. The zip code was retired on November 1, 1978 and the post office closed.[4] Larsmont is now covered by zip code 55616 based in Two Harbors.
Little Red School house-Built in 1914, the one-room Larsmont schoolhouse has always been a community focal point. Children, once home schooled, were educated here until 1932. Later it became home for a time to the Larsmont Volunteer Fire Department. It’s been the site of community picnics, baseball games, church services and weddings. Currently, it is the polling place for the community.
