Duluth and surrounding area

May 30, 2018 by Roberta Rippberger

I took this shot of the lift bridge and Ore Boat while walking during my lunch break. We are lucky to be surrounded by such awe inspiring beauty and I try to remind myself of this daily.

There’s  also some pretty interesting history.  Duluth was founded on industry and although warehouses are now shopping districts, the history is evident. For example, the DeWitt-Seitz building in Canal Park, now home to several shops and restaurants, used to house one of Duluth’s busy and prosperous companies among other things: a manufacturing plant for mattresses and box springs. Morgan Park, now a neighborhood of larger Duluth, was originally a separate community built solely for steelworkers and their families. Warehouses dotted the Duluth landscape and the waterfront along Lake Superior was no exception.

Duluth, Minnesota’s third largest city, is a long city that stretches along the lake, with many neighborhoods built on the steep hills. Known affectionately as the “lake effect,” the weather at the Sky Harbor weather station on Park Point (elevation 607 feet) may be foggy and 50 degrees, while the weather up by Duluth’s International Airport (elevation 1,427 feet) may be partly sunny and 70 degrees. Lake Superior makes Duluth’s summers a bit cooler and its winters a bit warmer. The Aerial Lift Bridge and its accompanying foghorn – and viewing huge ocean vessels – are integral to life in Duluth. The Maritime Museum is a must see when in Canal Park.

Residents and visitors alike enjoy all that Duluth and the surrounding area have to offer year round.  Hiking, skiing, fishing, cycling (Duluth has killer mountain biking), fine dining, fun dining, brewering, cidering and shopping until you are dropping. What’s not to love about Duluth?

Homes for sale in Duluth and surrounding area include the following communities:

Kenwood,  Congdon,  Denfeld, Spirit Valley, Norton Park, Lincoln Park, Duluth Heights, Downtown, East End, Fon Du Lac, Gary New Duluth, Hunter Park,  Lakeside, Lester Park, Observation Hill, Park Point, Riverside, Piedmont, Smithville, Woodland, Morgan Park. Head up the shore to Knife River, Larsmont, Two Harbors, Beaver Bay, Silver Bay, Tofte, Grand Marais and smaller communities along the way. Head south on I35 towards Hinckley to  Esko, Cloquet, Barnum, Willow River.  Don’t forget Superior, Wisconsin.  We are called the “Twin Ports” for a reason.
